| STRESS MANAGEMENT THROUGH COSMIC MEDITATION |
Stress is a feeling created in our mind due to our body's reaction to events or situations, which could be in the form of a work pressure, negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, hatred, fear, revenge or due to personal or financial problems. |
A certain amount of stress is salutary. Such a stress that goads us to rise above the circumstances is called the good stress. Otherwise, we are likely to become very helpless, lethargic, with the result that we may no longer be functional. |
Where the level of stress exceeds tolerance level of an individual, his physical and mental health gets impaired; this is the ‘bad stress’. It is this bad stress that we must learn to manage. |
When we are going through stress, the body reacts either to face the problem causing it or run away from it. This response of our body is our defence mechanism that triggers the release of certain hormones, in particular adrenaline. The gush of adrenaline brings about instant changes in our body : |
- The heart beats much faster.
- The liver releases glucose, which is the principal source of energy.
- The blood in the capillaries is diverted to muscles and certain parts of the body giving a pale hue to the skin.
- The digestive process virtually comes to a halt.
- The pulse rate rises. So also the blood pressure (BP).
- Breathing pattern changes, it becomes slower or faster, as the case may be.
- The arteries leading to the heart and brain get constricted, increasing thereby the risk of heart attack and brain hemorrhage.
- Muscles become hard and tense, but the rectum and bladder muscles become loose and uncontrolled.
- Immune system becomes weak.
This is called ‘fight or flight’. All sudden changes equip the body to either fight or flee from stress. However, if such a situation is prolonged, it may cause an untold damage to our body.
This phenomenon dates back to the Stone Age; when our ancestors hunted wild animals. A gush of adrenaline from fear of the latter triggered the fore mentioned changes and prepared them to fight or flee. While this type of situation arose once in a while in those days, so it was harmless to our body, but today we are exposed to the wild animal- like threat and fear all the time throughout the day.
Modern life style has created so much of the stress level in our lives that is worse than the stress created by the fear of the wild animals. From the time we get up in the morning, we continuously release adrenaline due to our hectic daily chores and connected problems like work pressure, family disputes, children settlement problems and marital discords and so on. You can well imagine the damage being done to our health by the excessive release of adrenaline that may cause problems like hypertension, diabetes, brain and heart stroke because our body is not designed to take this amount of stress. |
